Facebook nearby friends updating

I have been trying to figure out how often facebook's nearby friends option updates location, but I'm not having any luck.
When I look at my nearby friends some say they were somewhere "1+ hours ago" - even if I know they have been on Facebook since that time. Others say "4 minutes ago" even in the middle of the night, when I suspect they are not active. I am wondering how that works - is it updated in the background? How often? Does it matter what kind of phone you are on? (The middle if the night updates seem to come from non-iPhones?). Googling is failing me! Thanks.
