What's your Joomla search solution?

I don't know if I'm alone here, but I'm finding the search functionality in Joomla to be terrible. I'm looking for something that provides filtering by site category and sorting by relevance, date, etc. I've searched the Joomla extension page and nothing seems to be able to accomplish this. What's your Joomla search solution?

We use Google site search. It works well, and works like Google so everyone sort of intuitively knows how it works, but it doesn't have filtering or easy date range stuff.

But yeah: Joomla's built in search is just terrible. I'm curious to see what else is recommended here.
