Can you attribute this painting of a merman? Likely circa 1910-50, maybe a Belgian Symbolist or French Surrealist painter.

Is there any signature or marking anywhere on it? I couldn't tell from the photo.

That painting doesn't show up anywhere using reverse image search (tineye.com). Make of that what you will.

What are the clues that led you to think 1910-50? It actually looks like an amateur painting to me rather than something by an artist.

Google and Bing reverse image search don't have it either. And the EXIF tags on the source image don't say anything useful, the photo was maybe taken today. Is it a detail from a larger painting? How do you know the date?

Response by poster: date clue: it belongs in a collection with Francis Picabia, Rene Magritte, Wilfredo Lam, and yes, some unknown/amateur artists (although I think it is a skilled painting).

Have the curators of this collection told you that they don't know who the artist of this painting is? Because if not, you might try asking them?
