OS X 10.9.3 local networking broken

Updating to OS X 10.9.3 appears to have broken my ability to see other devices on my local network. Any ideas on how to fix?
I have a Mac Mini and a Macbook Air connected to an Airport Extreme router. Updated both to 10.9.3 and now they can no longer see other as network devices. Have tried all the usual rebooting, unplugging, permission fixing etc. Both still access the wider web just fine, but they just can't see each other, meaning I can't share screens etc.

Version 10.9.3 has other reported problems, including converting the Users folder to hidden status.
It wasn't the OS update that did that, it was iTunes 11.2 and Find My Mac. The borked permissions and such were (supposedly) fixed in iTunes 11.2.1 so you might want to install that, modernnomad.

Can we assume that includes making sure File Sharing and Screen Sharing were still enabled on the Mini and Macbook?

Response by poster: Yes, I installed iTunes 11.2.1 as well, but the problem persists.

Check firewall settings on all the machines in the Security Preference pane.

Yep, what's happening in System Preferences >> Sharing.

Response by poster: All the settings in System Preferences are as they were prior to the update - file sharing and screen sharing are both turned on. The firewall is off.
