James Ellroy filter: In The Big Nowhere, who did Buzz Meeks "save"?

Gene Niles attempts to murder Mickey Cohen, but mistakes Buzz for the Mick -- and Buzz smokes Niles.
Then Buzz reflects that "He'd just saved the life of the most dangerous, most generous man he'd ever met."
Who was that?

Isn't he jokingly referring to himself?

Poor Buzz Meeks.

That had occurred to me.
I'm new to Ellroy (outside LA Confidential movie) and I'm overwhelmed. My god. He has saved my novel.

I can't remember how Meeks feels about Cohen, but that would be the other obvious choice.

It's ambiguous. Either himself or Cohen. Good writing!
