James Ellroy filter: In The Big Nowhere, who did Buzz Meeks "save"?

I'm new to Ellroy (outside LA Confidential movie) and I'm overwhelmed. My god. He has saved my novel.

I can't remember how Meeks feels about Cohen, but that would be the other obvious choice.
