Furniture kits?

Hi all. Does anyone know of a good place to buy furniture kits? What I mean is unassembled, unfinished furniture, preferably shipped to your door. In particular I am looking for a "breakfast bar" or "kitchen island." Is there a store like this?

Best answer: I just ordered from Pop's Furniture this weekend. I bought a piece that was on clearance -- with free shipping, which was a huge bonus. So far, it seems reputable and reliable. They've sent me a receipt and a UPS tracking number, but there's no info on my package so far. I'll post back here once I receive it, to let you know how the whole experience went.

Hmm. Breakfast Bar and Kitchen Island both sound like "cabinets' and not "furniture" so you might have more luck using that as a search term. Most big box home improvement stores sell pre-assembled cabinets, sometimes unfinished. You may be able to find something that fits your bill.

Best answer: Off the top of my head, here are few places:

Shaker Workshops

Gothic Cabinet Craft

Van Dyke's

Try Googling "unfinished furniture" and "furniture kits" for more leads.

Ikea is Ok, if you want your furniture to last about a year before you need to get it replaced. There was a point where the majority of my house was decorated in Ikea furniture. 2 moves later, and I had to rent a dumpster to get rid of it all.

Imho, Ikea's wood furniture is sturdy. You can reinforce the joints with glue and screws if you're worried about durability. I don't have experience with their particle board / composite furniture.

When I got bookshelves from Ikea, the shipping was very expensive. But they have lasted well so far.

IKEA's rate of shipping is rather steep (here's a price chart), and sometimes they don't ship everything necessary - espcially if an item was originally out of stock and needs to be shipped later. Someone bought a large dresser and is still missing some of the drawers two months later.

I've ordered from Pop's. No problems, good furniture.
