How do I stop a fax machine from calling my cell phone?

I get a call once or twice a day on my cell phone that is just high pitched beeping and it sounds like a fax machine. The caller-ID says Unavailable. It's incredibly annoying and it's at random times, last night it was at 3:40 in the morning! I called Verizon and their only suggestion was to change phone numbers. I know there are various things you can do on landlines to stop calls like this, but what can I do on my cell phone?

Call-forward your cell temporarily to a fax machine to receive the fax?

The upshot, according to those threads: hook up a fax machine to your landline, forward your cell phone number to your landline, find out who it is, call them and get removed.

Ditto fionab: I've had similar issues in the past, and It's boiled down to sending a fax back to the offending machine with a request for a phone call from its operator. Usually they're happy to assist in correcting the issue.
