Help a girl who's clueless about hair.

Is there a resource (web, ideally, but books, etc. are fine too) that shows multiple ways to style basic haircuts? I want it to show a picture of the cut (ex. shoulder-length bob), with lots of options as far as updo's, blow-outs, waves, partial ups, etc. I'm not talking about the 1 or 2 styles it shows in a lot of styling books that are available at the chain salons - I want lots and lots and lots. Is there anything out there?

You know, I've looked for the same thing and haven't found any. But if you find a good hair stylist, they can look at your favorites and tell you which ones are more versatile. Once you chose one, they can show you different things to do with it before you leave (tip VERY well for all that...they aren't making money while they spend all that time with you.)

Personally, I have had a hard time finding a good stylist. I live in a small town and the stylists around here are newish, leave when they get experience and, from the experiences I have, suck. Royally. Ask around...don't call to make an appointment, go to the salon and be prepared to hang out a bit until the stylist can chat with you a minute. Make sure you're comfortable with them before making that first appointment.

It probably is a good idea to have just a simple shampoo and trim the first time around. Talk to the person about what you are thinking about doing eventually, see what they say and how willing they are to help you experiment. If they seem vague and uninterested, you were just getting a trim, anyway, so you can move on before making the 'big change'.

That said, I have no patience and have actually ended up going home and giving myself a 'hold your hair up perfectly straight and cut it off' layering session to get me through until I found someone to do it RIGHT. That's how bad the cut was.

So...that's more than you wanted, I'm sure.

Oh...another idea...look for a celebrity that has the same face shape you do. Then look at pictures of her with the same cut done different ways. That's probably the best way to find the right style.

Good luck!
