iTMS Gift Certificates for Aussies

I was reading this thread the other day and it got me wondering how the iTMS gift voucher system works. We have friend who is working here in Australia until the end of the year and has a US credit card, can she get us a gift certificate if we have .mac account or do we need to have a US iTMS account for it to work?

I'm already aware that this is a technical breach of some terms of service for iTunes I just want to know the technicalities of it all. Have any other Aussie done this successfully?

I'm an American living in Australia. I no longer have a US credit card. I don't even have a .mac account. I do, however, have an iTunes account. My mom in the States was able to gift me $20. It uses my iChat/AOL Instant Messenger login. Worked like a charm! I just have to set it to say I'm in the US. As long as your friend has a US billing address, she should be able to get you one.
