Ipod to Computer file names, renaming files question
December 19, 2013 10:40 AM   Subscribe

I transferred files from an old ipod to a new computer, but lost all of my file names. Names appear in hundreds of folders like AAAA , and within each folder 100's of songs title AAAA. Now the catch is the mp3 tags still have some of the proper filenames, but what program can I use, or what method to strip MP3/ID3 tags to rename all of the files? (I don't want to do this manually, were talking 10,000+ files)

Best answer: MediaMonkey will let you rename files based on the tags.

mp3tag will happily do this.

PC or Mac? ITunes will do that if you import the songs and ask it to consolidate the library. It will name the files "based on disc number, track number, and the song title."

seconding wnissen, re-import into Itunes, just make sure 'manage my library' or whatever it's called is selected before you drag the directory back in there.

Response by poster: Only tried the first piece of software. (media monkey) Note: function tools/autoorganizefiles does this trick asked in question perfectly, and will even sort into artist folders if desired...

Response by poster: oh, and the free version of software does this as well.
