Who can carry around a handgun in California?

My father recently bought a pistol in California. Can I take it to the range by myself, i.e. without my father coming with me?

I currently live in NY but I'll be going home to CA in a couple of weeks. He bought the pistol a some weeks ago and we plan on going to the range together a few times. But, as my father will still have to go to work, I'd like to be able to take the pistol and go to the range by myself.

Under the California Penal Code 31615, I need to get a handgun safety certificate in order for my father to be able to legally lend the gun to me. I think that all I need to do is pass that safety test that my father took in order to purchase the gun. After that, I can legally take his gun to the range myself.

Am I right on this? Is there anything I'm missing? I'm 24 and I have a NY drivers license.

Yes. You must transport it unloaded in a locked container, you must have a California Handgun Safety Certificate, and you can not keep it for more than 30 days. I don't know if it will be a pain to get a HSC with a NY driver's license, but the test to get it is really simple.
