Friend is looking for a long-lost book

Help my friend out. She's trying to identify a book she read in the past, based on the Norse myth of Fenrir - but set in modern times, with a boy as the protagonist. Strange things begin to happen to the boy, and an old man tells him to "Look for things that aren't there." Ring any bells? Friend's description of the book can be found within.

Here is her description:
"It's a book I read in the late 70s/early 80s. It was set in modern times.
"It's loosely based on the Norse legend of Fenrir. The main character is a boy who meets an old guy, and weird things happen to him. So the old man tells him to "'look for things that aren't there.'" The kid figures that out when he sees a sign missing a letter, and he starts seeing other letters like that, and writes them down and takes them to the guy, and I think it spells either Loki or Fenrir.
"Then Loki shows up (and might have a green outfit and one eye). And I think he goes to the zoo and talks to and/or releases a raven.
"And I think there's something about him going in a boat to the island with Fenrir, and he's trying to keep the chain links from breaking. But that might be from another book, I'm not sure.
"But I REALLY REALLY WANT TO FIND IT, and I've googled Fenrir and all the different variations I can find. Plus tried looking for different ways to put "look for what isn't there" and the raven, and Loki. But now that Thor and The Avengers is out, that's impossible."
If anyone has questions for her, she'll be following this thread. Thanks!
