Help me find two animations from early-mid 2000s

There were two animations I saw years ago pre-youtube that have stuck with me, but I no longer have a link to the animation itself, or even name. However, I'm pretty sure I originally found these animations here on metafilter. One was a live-action city being invaded by fun animated characters. The other was a Japanese Red Riding Hood-esque animation (much more animation than this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oEhxd16f0A). So if you can help me figure out what these are from my loose recollection, I will be amazed.

1) I believe it was a graffiti type artist (not MUTO) who made his own characters, and these characters were composited into a real city. Like they were attacking the city (california), but they were fun and colorful, squiggly kind of characters with tentacles I believe. Mid-2000s.

The creator was more known as an artist than a video maker.

2) This one is like a Red Riding Hood story, except Japanese, with live action and animated elements together. It got a little gruesome in a cartoony kind of way, and I specifically remember a person giving a thumbs up in the end. I believe it seemed like an ad, but for a fake product.

And that's about it. I've already tried looking myself and didn't get anywhere, so any leads will be greatly appreciated.

Man, I thought I mighta had #1 until I read more of your description. Anyway "Pixels" still fits a little, and is fun to watch in any case.
