What was that enchanting smell? (not bufala)

Spent a little less than a week in Paestum, Salerno in late September/early October this year. I remember smelling something beautiful and herb-like, particularly in/around the forum area. I'd like to know what it was that I was smelling!

Regrettably, I'm no herb/plant expert, so I wasn't able to identify the smell at the time and unfortunately--without being able to smell it again-- I can't describe the smell in any more detail. But it was ubiquitous in almost every greenspace, so probably something that grows wild there. And it was lovely.

I'm interested primarily so that I can relate my scent-experience to my friends and family when I tell them about my trip. However, if it is an acquirable plant, I just might be interested in doing that...

Citrus treas, laurel/bay, and rosemary all grow in the area and smell wonderful.

Best answer: At Herculaneum I was bowled over by the scent from entire fields of oregano, growing in vigorous dark green bushes. Fresh oregano smells different from dried. Rosemary is also another strong possibility as it grows in large bushes in that region too.

Maybe you could visit a nursery and smell aromatic herbs until you identify it.
