How long is too long for my dog to be in his crate?

What is the maximum duration a dog can be left alone in his locked crate? I've been maxing it out at 3 hours (and I still feel terrible) and wondering if on the odd occasion I can push that to 4 or 5 or if that's really not a nice thing to do.

My 45lb, 6 month old mutt pup loves his crate, sort of. It's a large crate filled with toys and distractions that could easily fit a small buffalo, and he occasionally hangs out in there with the door open.
I surf every morning and give him a chew toy, lock him in and disappear for at most 3 hours. He knows the drill and it's part of our routine. Otherwise, outside of a rare errand he can't come on or dinner out with the wife, I am around this dog and engaged with him 24/7.
I experimented with leaving him in the bedroom with open access to the yard but he nervously chews EVERYTHING that is chewable. Just a pure unadulterated force of destruction. I expect this will fade with age or his teeth finally arrive, as he doesn't do this when I am home.
He has some separation anxiety when I leave but that's starting to fade as he's realizing I do eventually come back.
My wife and I want to go to the Chargers vs NY Giants football game in December which, even if we happily leave after the 3rd quarter, will probably keep us out of the house for 3-4 hours.
Well aware this is a subjective answer depending on the temperament of the dog and what borders on cruelty for some and not others, but is 4 hours really not very nice? 5? That seems like a hell of a long time for my little guy, or is it? I HATE putting Finlay in his crate, but he's a dog and has to learn that extended crating is part of his life on occasion, right?
