My pay got cut. For the paycheck starting October 13. I sort of just found out today.

You're not my lawyer, not legal advise, go see a real lawyer and find a new job don't need to be said. I know you're not my lawyer and I'm already looking for a new job. I also don't want to waste a real lawyer's time if it's a definite thing that I'm wrong. So here goes.
I'm an hourly employee in South Carolina. I was making $12 an hour. After a string of bad performance in a service industry job (behind the scene issues, nothing the customer saw or was really effected by) I was told by my boss no later than October 12 that we needed to talk about my pay going down.
Sometime in the October 13-15 range we had what I thought was that conversation. He knows I can do better, there isn't anyone he'd rather have working with him, he sees where some more training needs to happen since obviously what I've gotten was either wrong or lacking. No mention of my pay going down.
Fast forward to today. I went into work and was sat down and told my pay was going down to $9. Some of the reasons were things that happened between October 15 and October 22.
That's what's really throwing me off. I was not told until today what the pay reduction was going to be. The previous conversation made it sound like I wasn't getting a reduction since nothing was mentioned about it.
I was told by my boss that legally he needs to give people 1 week warning before he can lower their pay. But does saying "We need to talk about your pay going down" cover that, especially if there are no numbers mentioned? No written documentation of of my screw ups. Only verbal things, and unfortunately getting a verbal tear down in this industry is something pretty common. But could that verbal teardown ≠ a warning type behavior work in my favor?
Is it worth it to talk to some sort of employment lawyer? I don't have the money to get one unless it's pay on results, and even then probably not unless I get a lot more than the $2-300 my next paycheck isn't going to have on it that I thought until today was going to be there.
Again, I'm already looking for a new job. So anyone who just has that to say with nothing else can skip replying since that's already in the works.
