Lingering ankle/foot pain after suspected overuse injury. What should I do?

Three weeks ago, I noticed some pain in my ankle joint while jogging. It felt like I was possibly landing wrong, and the only way I can think to describe it is that I "crunched" it while jogging. I did not feel any pain in the ankle until I went for another jog two weeks later, when I felt mild pain throughout the entire run. In the days that followed, I occasionally felt some very mild pain while walking around, mild enough that I didn't worry about it.
Two days after my second run, I went to my boxing gym. I did not feel any pain while punching on the bags, but I felt what I would describe as moderate pain as soon as I started jumping rope. I tried to continue by putting most of the pressure on my other foot, and was only able to jump about 15 times before I decided it was not a good idea to continue.
The rest of the following week, I felt moderate pain while walking, so I did not exercise and wore my hiking boots while walking for ankle support (which helps). I have been icing it a couple of times a day as well. The pain started in the front/middle of my ankle joint, but now has traveled to the top of my foot. It feels like some kind of muscle/tendon issue, not bone. It hurts more when I use stairs, and when I walk around wearing shoes without ankle support. This week, I have had mild pain, but still persistent enough that I am afraid to exercise at all.
What did I do to my poor ankle? I'm concerned that this is taking so long to heal. Can I continue to just take it easy until the pain goes away? Am I doing damage by continuing to walk around on it? I don't want to see a doctor, but I will if I need to.
