Dimly Remembered Kids' Book About a Flying Squirrel and His Friends

I've been racking my brain trying to remember a book I liked when I was a kid. As I recall it was a small chapter book, with a reading level somewhere in the 2nd - 3rd grade range. It was about a group of forest animals, and I think most or all of them were nocturnal. The main one was a flying squirrel.
In my memory, the cover was a dark blue/black night scene with the flying squirrel leaping out a of pine tree with visible pine cones. We had it in hardback. This would have been 1978, give or take, but the book itself could have been older. I cannot think of the title at all, but I think it had the word "night" in it.
Googling has turned up nothing. Does this ring a bell for anyone?

Could it be Mystery in the Night Woods by John Lawrence Peterson? The edition I linked to is from 1991 but the first reviewer there read it in 1975.

Here's a blog post with a cover image from an older edition of Mystery in the Night Woods. It is a dark blue night scene, but no pine cones and no leaping.
