I want to ride my bicycle... but I don't have a bike

All my good friends are getting bikes and going on rides on local green lines/green ways, or having group rides. While I had only kind of wished I had a bike before, I rented a bike at a local park and went on a 14 mile ride with a couple of friends yesterday, and now I really want one. I also know now some of the things that I definitely want in a bike, that I would have thought didn't matter before. How to select one at a reasonable price?!

I've been considering State Bikes, I have a couple of friends that have them, and they seem pretty nice, and not super expensive. I really like the frames. I also considered Republic Bikes, but I hear that they aren't quite as nice as State bikes and are only slightly less expensive.
Here are the things that I know that I want:
Light weight frame. The bike I rode yesterday was a hybrid and it was too heavy for the kind of riding I'll be doing regularly. I could keep up most of the time but the hills were way more difficult for me.
Hand brakes. This seems like a no- brainer, but the Dutch style State Bikes have cruiser brakes.
I would LIKE for the tires to be a little thicker than the State road bikes, but I don't know if that is an option, if I want the frame of a street bike. I know the smaller tires are faster, but since I'm kind of a newbie at this those tiny tires make me a little nervous. But I can always practice so that isn't a must.
Also... not a must, but I'd like for it to be at least kind of cute. I know that I do not want a cruiser so it isn't going to be adorable retro looking, but not hideous.
What are the options for me to get at this level? Are the State bikes the best way to go, or is there a way I can get all of the things that I want and not have to spend as much. Or is there something even better that I haven't heard of out there? I know nothing about this and am going on what my friends have told me.
