Trapped in the metro station - Looking for title of obscure 80s children tv series

I am looking for a certain children's tv program which ran on an unknown channel in the New York area around 1984 and probably elsewhere.

The premise of the series was a small band of people being trapped in some sort of fantasy maze mysteriously located inside an abandoned underground metro station.

Specifically, I remember what must have been the first episode: A former minor celebrity turned street sweeper is asked for an autograph by a pretty young lady. Accidentally, the lady drops the autograph and it flies into aforementioned underground metro station where she goes to retrieve it. The street sweeper warns her to go inside, but she does it anyway and he follows her. Inside they meet other trapped people and explore the maze, finding several strange rooms, one of them being some kind of mirror hall.

The production values were not very high, and as far as I remember, the series ran in short segments as a part of a sunday morning children's program. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Thanks!

I know that this is not what you are asking for, but if the television series as described interests you, you may find interesting a fantasy BBC miniseries which Neil Gaiman wrote called Neverwhere. It is available on DVD and as a very well-written novel.

Hmmm... Is there also a 'big bad guy' that they are trying to escape from, and a roller-coaster-type conveyence system that they use?

Sorry if this is off track, but I think I remember the show as well...

Yeah, the description, although not it, did remind me a lot of Neverwhere also.

@WinnipegDragon: Maybe, I can't rule it out, certainly it would fit the mood.
