Just don't let him eat marshmallows all day

I need recommendations on articles and books on kindergarten/elementary school education and how it affects someone's later success. My friend is worried that her son's kindergarten program isn't high quality enough. I'm of the opinion that home life is more important at this age, but maybe I'm wrong! Where should I start reading?

My friend's son is going to an up-and-coming public kindergarten program in Brooklyn. She's worried that the student:teacher ratio is too high (25 kids to one teacher and one teacher's aide) and ... honestly, I don't know what else, other than that she's comparing it to her son's fancy private preschool nearby. The school has high ratings, good test scores, and great reviews from parents in previous years, but I understand that she's still concerned.
I tend to think kids in a stable, loving, academically enriched home environment will do well at nearly any decent elementary school, but I am not a teacher, nor am I a parent. So I'd like to provide her with information so she knows what to look out for during the school year. Anything about what is correlated with success later in life (sort of like the Marshmallow Test
), especially in regards to early education. Thanks in advance.
