NYC n00b ISO mind blowing club experience

NYC club Filter: My partner and I are on our way to NYC and he has never been before. Help me blow his mind...

I grew up out east and have had my fun share of NYC experiences.. now (living in Denver) whenever I venture out into the nightlife, I am always disappointed -- my very first club experience (of any type) was the Limelight ten years ago. Friday night will be our chance to go out and I want to make sure he understands why the only thing that tops NYC clubbing is Black Rock City.

I figured we would start the night at Splash in Chelsea, just so he can see the gay scene. After strutting our stuff, I am betting we will get bored and want to migrate to where the real party people are.

So, my question to you: Do you know of a place with multiple rooms/genres of music, thousands of party people being self expressed with or without costumes and extreme wear, dark naughty things happening in the basement, etc?

PS: We don't care if others are doing drugs, but we are not into that so much anymore. When I say 'mind blowing' I mean in the reality expanding kind of way..

I'm really not the one to be answering this, but since no one else has yet....

I can't speak to the "dark naughty things" part of your question, but in terms of huge spaces with multiple rooms, Crobar (which is enormous) might be your best bet.

More to the point, Time Out NY has extensive club listings. You should be able to buy a copy almost anywhere in NYC (and you may be able to find one in Denver too).

Fleet Week brings sailors to town, and sailors like to party.

Or so television tells me. When I lived in New York I didn't exactly move in those circles.

It may not be very current, but this has lots of information on the club scene in New York.
