Layers of Outlook calendars

Trying to find an Outlook solution that will permit users to only have to update one calendar and then to have various audiences in the office see only the entries relevant to that audience.

Is there a way for an office to have an Outlook calendar setup as follows: each user has one calendar they update. Depending on the entry, they can mark it as one of three categories. One category would then sync with a main calendar, the second category would sync with a calendar for the person's department, and the third category of appointment entries would remain private for the individual only.

So, for example, in the first category would go things like vacation and sick days which would be viewable by the entire office and particularly by front desk staff who need to know how to direct callers searching for a particular employee. The second category might have an individual's court dates and out of office meetings so that unit supervisors and other staff in each department know where their colleagues are at any given moment during a work day. The third category might include medical appointments, your kid's soccer game, and so on.

The ultimate goal would be to able to install the first two work-related calendars on a Sharepoint site.

I hope this is clear--please ask questions if it's not. Thanks!

You might be able to do it by just creating groups and having users subscribe/join the groups. One for main, one for each department. Then, when someone wants to put a date on the calendar, they just create an event with for the appropriate on the distribution list.
