Looking for a YA novel about boats

I'm looking for a YA novel that was: - published before 1989 - omniscient third-person narrator - is set sometime between the 17th and 19th centuries - is set on a large ship (a schooner, I believe) I read a book matching this description as required reading in my eighth grade English class. Can you help me figure out what it was?

Best answer: A shot in the dark, but could it be Carry On Mr. Bowditch?

Patrick O'Brian's The Golden Ocean might fit, but it's not on a schooner.

This may be way off, as this novel is first person, but The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle?

Could've been one of the many ocean-going stories written by Stephen Meader -- his books are all available now at Southern Skies.
