Introductory sailing lessons in Bar Harbor, Maine?

My extended family will be getting together next week near Bar Harbor, Maine. Several of the youngsters have expressed an interest in learning how, or at least being introduced, to sailing. None of us is familiar with the area. Any recommendations for sailing lessons in the area?

Best answer: I used to sail through Southwest Harbor... Apparently it is now a really big thing in that area.

You might try contacting any yacht club in the area. They often have lessons and sometimes just members looking for a 'crew'.

Best answer: MDI Community Sailing is a nonprofit dedicated to teaching sailing to folks who live on Mount Desert and in the surrounding communities. They have programs for kids ages 6 - 17, as well as for adults. Here is their list of currently available classes.

Their website says they work in partnership with Northeast Harbor sailing school, so if MDISailing doesn't have something that works for you, they might. However, if your budget and schedule can accommodate MDISailing, I'd encourage you to use them; they're a great nonprofit devoted to keeping the maritime tradition alive in Maine.

Response by poster: nanukthedog, anastasiav, that looks like just the thing. Now I have to decide if I want to wake up & provide 4 day of taxi service.
