The dreadful words of “student loans”.

Back in 2006-2008, I took a course for MRI technologist at a vocational school for 2 years. The program itself cost about $27-28 grand overall. I finished on January of 2008, and got a job 4 months later at a mom and pop joint. Long story short, the place sucked with the high turnover rate, cutting down on essential services like water for the patients, relied on MRI students to do front desk work and etc. I was able to adapt to the ridiculous work environment and get quality scans for the patient. Eventually, I was let go due to lack of “experience” and found out that the guy who replaced me was a newbie too. Never got paid for the last 2 weeks that I worked. What happened there is a whole another story that I want to drop into a chasm.

5 months after being let go, I went back to school to pursue a bachelor’s degree in health administration. Got a part-time job at an Optical Department. Went to community college, and eventually a state university. Fortunately, I have obtained grants therefore tuition was basically covered. I am walking on stage next May. I am thankful that I didn’t incur debt for my bachelor’s degree, but the student loan from my MRI program is like an elephant in the room. It’s not as bad as those horror stories I’ve read on yahoo about some people incurring 3-4x the amount for something like sociology or culinary arts, but still a massive headache that has yet to become a profitable gain for me.

It’s not a completely lost cause as there’s a facility I found who welcomes students or alumni. When I was unemployed for 3 months, I was doing hands-on work as I have my certification current and up to date. But I needed to work like every other laid-off individual, and got a full-time job working for a medical supply company. Employee friendly environment with benefits that doesn’t cost an arm or a leg. Great flexibility that my work schedule won’t interfere with the last remaining classes needed to get my degree. At the same token, seeing that Sallie Mae letter come into my mailbox makes me cringe. Haven’t practiced in the MRI field since 2008, and I don’t feel as engaged anymore thus looking forward to pursuing other endeavors within the medical field. Has anyone in here gone through a similar experience that I’m going through? Anyone’s 2 cents is gladly appreciated.
