Looking for examples of a newspaper and tv news sites that have a well-designed approach to integrating high volumes of content and nav. At any location, in any language, etc.

Newsmap. You can get an instant idea of what the current biggest news stories are in several languages/countries.

New York Times. Well organized, visually predictable and updated frequently. The links always work. Visually refreshing with (usually) unobtrusive ads and lots of white space. Option to go to "today's paper" or remain with the on-line version, which is not the same and is frequently updated as news is created.

Of course, for this there is a paywall. Well worth it, IMO. I go to CNN or other biggies only after checking NYT. Kind of like Google v. Bing.

I like the design of the New York Times website also. Pretty much any other news site I look at from the front page instantly overwhelms me due to an incredibly cluttered and busy appearance, too many images and too colorful, etc. There's so much going on visually at most news sites that I have no idea what to look at and just want to leave. NY Times doesn't cause that response for me.

I also find the NY Times site to be about the best as far as US news sites go (and the iPhone app is excellent too). Many other sites like NPR, NBC, ABC, CBS, AP, BBC, etc. have a more cluttered and/or more overwhelming presentation. The NY Times does a good job of keeping the front (home) page manageable both in terms of visual cacophony and overall amount of content.

Its stories are heavily celebrity and trash oriented but The Mail Online is stunning in its ability to keep people clicking. They optimize everything within an inch of its life to get the most pageviews and engagement and it's very high volume. Is the news good? No. Is it a a well-designed site commercially? I think so and the numbers seem to back it up.
