Birthday party venues in Toronto?

My 40th birthday approaches, and I'm looking for a suitable venue for a party in Toronto.

Basically I'd like to host a few people in a space that isn't my house, where drinks can be served and there is space to dance. So a small(ish) room that can be rented for an evening (and an alcohol license obtained for the night), or a back room in a bar (maybe even the whole of a very small bar?) that can be reserved for a private function. A few other details:

- in terms of numbers I'm expecting 20-30 people
- by "Toronto" I mean the general downtown area; let's say south of Bloor (or not far north of it), as far west as Lansdowne, or as far east as Coxwell. Close to subway lines/major transit routes would be a plus
- most of the guests will also be about my age
- the night in question would be Saturday, August 31st

A few friends have booked the second floor of Statler's in the gay village for free with the promise of bringing in enough people to buy drinks (20-30 sounds about right). It's not huge but probably big enough for your numbers.

The Blue Jays are playing at 1 pm. You could start there.

Best answer: Southern Accent has a number of rooms that you can reserve - you need to put down a deposit, but there is no charge for the room, you just pay for whatever food and drinks you get. They are super nice, too, and you can arrange a special party menu. When we had a party there they let us decorate, wear costumes, and assigned us a waitress for the night who took our drink orders and got the drinks from the bar. It was awesome!

i had the sort of party you desribe at Swirl wine bar in leslieville, and it was AWESOME. def stop by for a drink to at least check it out! we had the best time, and the service there is the best.

when we wanted to go out dancing after, they even let me leave all my presents there and pick them up the next day!!

if you give them enough notice, they'll be able to stock up on beers of your choice for your crowd as well.

(happy early birthday!)

Another option is to check out condos and apartments in the area. We're apartment hunting and nearly ALL of them are touting a "gathering space". It's usually a largish community area, what in the seventies used to be called a 'Clubhouse'. There's a huge TV, a pool table and a catering kitchen.

The one in the place we're moving to also has tables that are perfect for cards or eating off of.

You may have to pay a couple hundred bucks to reserve it, and clean up after, but it might be more of the kind of thing you're looking for.

Happy Birthday!

Response by poster: My wife and I live very close to Swirl and love the place...it would be perfect if it had room for dancing (ideally I'd like to keep it to one venue).

oh, i missed the dancing stipulation, i'm sorry! maybe you could even push tables back / use the back room as a dance space? just an idea!

alternatively, if you're in the area, Wayla is also a great space and the back area could certainly fit the bill of what you're looking for. bonus: back patio!

Oh also, at southern accent they let us bring a laptop to hook up to the speakers in the room so we could play our own music.

You could look at the upstairs bar at The Yellow Griffin near Runnymede. It's further than Lansdowne, but it's practically in a subway station, and there's plenty of Green P parking within 2 blocks. We use it for playing board games and it's relatively lowkey. You might have to make a bit of room for dancing but we move the tables around for games, so moving them for dancing is likely to be fine.

Fire on the East Side, on Gloucester just east of Yonge, has a room upstairs that I think would work.
