Music + Commetary Podcast?

Know any podcasts that mixes music and commentary/analysis on the music?

I'm kind of surprised I haven't already stumbled upon this, but I'm itching to listen to a podcast that includes both music and some kind of discussion a round that music. I first thought of this wrt classical music ('this podcast will be about Wagner. Wagner does X, as we'll hear here. [plays song]. He also does Y, as we'll see here [plays song]...') but I'd be definitely interested in this podcast format for ANY kind of music. Not really looking for review fests, more discussion about why the music does what it does or what the artist is trying to do.

I know that copyright restrictions are going to be the main problem here, so I'm fine with a podcast which says 'go away and listen to this album. Done that? Good now let's talk...' but would prefer one that mixed the songs into the cast.

All Songs Considered does new music with some discussion, but not big analysis like you might be looking for.

Serendipitously, I was just listening to an episode of 99% Invisible in which Roman Mars recommended the podcast Sound Opinions — "the world's ONLY rock & roll talk show" according to their web page. I haven't listened to it yet, but it might be suitable.

Lyrics undercover is the closest of what's been listed so far, but unfortunately focuses on lyrics only. Sound opinions doesn't do music analysis.

Sound Opinions is close to what you're describing. From the show website: "Take two nationally respected rock critics, the latest music news, personal commentary, and exclusive interviews and performances, add a huge pile of records old and new, and the result is Sound Opinions—the world's only rock and roll talk show."

Previously, the hosts were the rock critics for Chicago's two major newspapers: Jim Derogatis for the Chicago Sun-Times and Greg Kot for the Chicago Tribune. Both have an encyclopedic knowledge of music and can tell a good story, so it makes for a fun listen. I am not sure if you will find it to be the exact kind of musical analysis you have described, but I've learned about most of my newest favorites from SO, and it is a must-listen for me every week. Great stuff.

Thirding Sound Opinions. Siskel and Ebert were apparently an obvious inspiration.

Coverville sort of does this but only with cover songs.

Oh hello, I have stumbled across this question very very late but have a half-answer that might be useful. Discovering Music is a programme on Radio 3 in the UK that does exactly this for classical music. Bad news is that it seems only to be available via iPlayer, not as a podcast so you might have difficulty getting hold of it. Good news is that they have some videos on their site that you might find interesting.
