San Francisco Lodging

Apparently lodging has taken a jump up in San Francisco since I was last there. Also August 2nd seems to already be booking up. I remember staying at Beresford Arms and on Lombard St. for around $100. They are booked or don't exist anymore. I've adjusted up to $150 and I'm still having trouble While I dither things are being booked. Plan B or C is to Airport and Bart in or Oakland and Bart in. I've seen the other SF lodging posts and those seem to be gone too. Please help.

How long will you be staying? Are vrbo, homeaway, airbnb, or craigslist options?

Try AirBNB or VRBO, but yeah, stuff in SF is tight right now.

Response by poster: One night possibly two. Thinking of starting on the way home for the second night.

Try The Nob Hill Motor Inn on Pacific and Van Ness. I've been staying there for years and while it's not the Ritz, it's always been clean and quiet and nice.

Also, free parking!

Just checked the Expedia rate, HOLY SHIT!

Call them directly.

Airbnb may be an option. Couchsurfing is another one.

But San Francisco is booming right now; it's natural for prices to have increased recently. And August 2 is not very far away.

What's your budget?

Also, someone just mentioned Trivago to me. Maybe it can help.

What about checking Airbnb for places in Sausalito? Sausalito itself is super cute, and the ferry from Sausalito to SF is quick and pretty frequent. It drops you off behind the Ferry Building (lovely in its own right!), so it's walking distance to lots of stuff in SF and very central to public transportation.

The Good Hotel is less expensive than the Nob Hill Motor Inn, but the area is somewhat noisier. We recommend both to visitors.

You know what, though? It looks like the Clift has a special on Expedia that's close to your range (not sure about dates though). Give it a look.

Also, check Living Social. They often have good deals in or near the city. Here's one, but there are others on the site.

I think the America's Cup races are impacting hotel rates.

Great Highway Inn (outer sunset) lists rooms starting at $135. It's out on the edge but you are steps away from the N-Judah.

I don't have any great suggestions, everything is freaking expensive here! Last hotel I stayed at was $200/night in Nob Hill.

I did want to mention that there is a BART strike right now. I have no idea how long it's expected to last, but it may impact your travels in/around the City.

Hotwire has what looks like some decent prices. Go to BetterBidding.com to find out which hotels are which on Hotwire. Also beware of their neighborhood definitions. "Union Square West" often means the Tenderloin (Nope. Nope. Nope.) and "Hayes Valley" sometimes means the Western Addition, which can be hit (and very) miss (only one "Nope.")

Note that if you stay by SFO, you want to be able to get to a BART station that is not SFO. There's a surcharge (nearly $4, I think) on fares to/from SFO. Same issue with the Oakland Airport (where the surcharge is in the form of AirBART), though there's a chance a hotel would have a shuttle to the Coliseum BART as well as the airport. (Though AC Transit does run from the airport to BART, which would save you a couple bucks over AirBART.)

Golden Gate Hotel is an awesome family-owned place. More of a B&B. $135 if you don't mind sharing a bath. Right near cable car. 15-minute walk from BART. (Not sure if they will be booked up.)

Try quikbook.com!

If you have to stay at the airport, the Doubletree is just $119 a night.

If you are willing to up your budget, there are some boutique hotels available in the city, though. The Stanford Court Renaissance, for example, is going for $166 on August 2nd.

Don't forget to check places you're considering staying against Bedbug Registry

Response by poster: Ended up with the Holiday Inn at SFO. $83 on priceline. We plan to drive in and park at the Civic Center. There were a lot of great ideas, thanks for the input.
