Non-commerical fabric softener for line drying?

I line dry, I want to make my own fabric softener.

What can I use that is not an animal product? Is mineral oil (a teaspoon or so) a good alternative? I am looking for something cheap. I don't mind my clothes stiff from line drying, but sometimes I need to use a fabric softener. I would buy a commercial vegan-type fabric softener, but they cost a small fortune. (FWIW, I am not a vegetarian, I just don't like the idea of tallow or horse fat on my clothing.)

I also use white vinegar. I pour it into the fabric softener cup (which is in the middle of my top loader).

You may have looked at this product and decided it was too expensive, but Method, which can be bought at Target, is animal free.

White vinegar, the smell dissipates so don't worry about smelling like salad dressing I just fill up the fabric softener slot. It won't help with static but as you line dry that most likely won't be an issue. Your clothes still come out the same sort of stiffness after you line dry, but the fabric itself feels softer after you've worn the clothes a bit to get the air drying stiffness out of them. . . if that makes sense.
