What Makes You Smile?
June 20, 2013 4:30 PM   Subscribe

What, when you see it, instantly makes you smile?

What non text (no written words/phrases) "thing" makes you smile when you see it? Wonderful landscapes, happy puppies, baby faces, two people sharing a special moment...?

I am working on a project and need ideas for what makes people smile. Thank you.

Children playing by themselves (talking to themselves, singing to themselves, making voices or vroom vroom noises for their cars).

Old people holding hands.

Heck, anyone holding hands.

People doing that awkward half running thing after they trip a little while walking to try to cover the fact that they just tripped.

Teenagers being all nervous and clumsy while flirting with each other.

Seeing someone get their stiletto heel stuck in the subway grating while walking down the sidewalk.

Lots of times it's seeing other people smile that makes me smile. Hearing people laugh in hysterics will make me smile (if not laugh myself, even if I don't know what they are laughing about). Babies waving bye-bye over their mom or dad's shoulder when exiting the train always makes me smile. Also, finding a long awaited paycheck in the mailbox. Relief of any kind. Weddings.

Making eye contact with another person walking by. I reflexively smile.

Alternatively, when another person smiles at me first, I smile back.

Following up on phunniemee's comment - seeing a person who almost tripped look around to see if anyone saw them.

Honestly? Stitch Pillow Pet. Once upon a time I would look at Tumblr pictures of the Stitch Pillow Pet, and every time it made me so happy. Now I have one and it still makes me so happy. Pretty dumb, but there it is.

Kids playing really elaborate games of pretend. Kids playing "Star Wars."

Rainbows. Especially double rainbows!

People being nice to other people on public transit.

Lilacs.

Classical guitar, played really well.

A really lovely display of produce in a market or store. When I am really low, something as simple as going to the nicest grocery store or the farmer's market can legitimately boost my mood enough so that I am capable of digging myself out the rest of the way. I don't even have to eat anything; it's just looking at things like lovingly stacked pyramids of peaches, or ten varieties of tomato, that can get me back to good.

I can't help but smile when I see multi-racial groups of kids playing together, or gay couples holding hands. I love how something that would have been a really big deal when I was growing up can now sometimes be unremarkable.

Puppies doing a thing, the thing can be literally any thing

Little kids falling down and making that face where they are very clearly weighing whether or not to burst into loud dramatic sobs

When I see a random person on the street laughing quietly to themselves about the same dumb thing I am laughing quietly to myself about

When bad things happen to rude people (street shovers stepping in poops, queue-jumpers dropping their ice creams, &c)

When people carrying a thing stumble and almost trip and fall and drop the thing, but save themselves at the last minute; I love the look of delighted relief and AW YEAH I'M THE BEST on their faces

Sulfur-crested cockatoos, rainbow lorikeets (both pretty and noisy buggers); kookaburras and tawny frogmouths (endearingly daggy looking). Bird hotels at dusk - this is what I call the trees that have lots of birds congregating in them, usually all making a big racket as they tell off the other birds, exchange gossip, etc. Bats, flying overhead or roosting in trees in the daytime. Cats waiting on the doorstep for their humans. Beautiful flowers of nearly any description. Koalas. The view from the top of a hill, not just because I've finally made it to the top of the hill. Stars. Amazing clouds. Forests, especially if tree ferns, mist, and/or sunshine filtering through the leaves are involved. Signs of renewal in late winter/early spring, like new buds, blossom, sprouting things. Leaves turning colour. The sun shining on someone's hair and setting it on fire. Children chasing pigeons. Old people holding hands. Children wearing hats with animal ears (unless they are very unhappy). Same-sex couples holding hands or leaning on each other or kissing (vs pashing). Other people smiling, really smiling.

My love singing in the shower....which happens every time he's in the shower. My cat chasing his tail. Smells of summer: BBQ smoke wafting through the neighborhood, boat exhaust, suntan lotion. Chopin. Buying something I feel guilty about spending money on and finding out it's marked down or on sale (this somehow happens to me a lot!)

- some combination of water + mountains
- a mixed or interracial couple/family (I'm mixed myself, with parents that weren't really supported by their families when they got married 43 years ago today)
- thunderstorms
- bigass snowstorms
- seeing someone pick up litter, and throw it away in a nearby trashcan
- seeing a local little kid (around 3 or so) give a biiiig thumbs up to any driver that actually comes to a full stop when he and his mom are crossing the crosswalk at a busy intersection
- memes that relate to some weird thought or thing I do and realizing that omg other people do or think that too
- making babies and toddlers smile when I'm randomly behind them or their parent in a line somewhere
- kitties!
- deliciously fragrant honeysuckles

Seeing our preschoolers playing Legos/drawing and singing to themselves, or telling a story while they do so. Seeing our pre-readers sitting looking at Elephant and Piggie books, or seeing our older kids carrying a book (or reading while walking) on their way to school.

Also, puppies when they have that "I don't have my coordination down just yet" wiggling as they run from room to room because they're so damn excited and don't know how else to express it.

Hearing the thunk of someone bumping into something, followed by the indignant "OWWWWW!" I don't know, it just cracks me up, because it's so clumsy and human and the comedic timing of the owwww is always spot on. It's especially hilarious when you're outside and can hear it happening inside someone else's house--*thunk* OWWWWWW!

People falling down in a way that reminds me of the Muppet Family Christmas "Careful of the icy patch!" bit. You know, when the person seem to rise up into the air before he falls, and his legs kind of flail underneath him while his eyes go wide? It's really only smile-worthy when the person in question doesn't get hurt, or ideally when it happens to me because then I don't have to feel bad about finding it fantastic.

Peonies. The wall over my desk that's covered in postcards. The soft little howl my dog does when I'm holding her food bowl, right before she eats. My dog sniffing at something a ton and deeply then exhaling really hard and moving on to something else. Cat tails, particularly when they curl about in the air. The sound of an otherwise quiet cat meow-ing. 'Toebeans' of cats and dogs. Views of the sky with extreme contrasts of light and dark clouds. Tall 'windbreaker' trees waving in the wind. Driving leisurely on a sunny day, on small highways with soft turns and are shaded by trees on both sides. The thought of being outside with trees on a sunny day. Kids playing with chalk on sidewalks. Colorful graffiti. Going through unorganized piles of old photographs. Really cool and unusual nail art. Winds at the beach, all the beaches. Watching turn signal lights of cars go in and out of sync with each other. Rain falling in a sunny spot. Flocks of geese in a line, or many lines, or a V-shape flying high up in the air. Totoros, sootballs. Manatees. Elephants.

Traffic coming to a halt because there is a family of ducks or geese crossing the road. It restores my faith in humanity.

This literally happened 10, 11 days ago one morning. At first I was confused but when I saw the row of birds finish up crossing the street it made my day right then and there.

I don't mean on TV, or porn, or in a magazine or any of that ridiculousness. I mean a real live naked woman, with me. I can be years into a relationship with someone and the sight of her naked will make me grin. I don't mean that in a sexual way, although that's awesome too... I just mean that the simple joy of skin against skin makes me grin... especially on a lazy Sunday morning.
