Cell contract finally over! Now I want to port my number... how?

How do I port my AT&T phone number to Net 10?

My contract is finally up, and I've weighed all of my options locally. AT&T offers the best coverage in the area, but our contract cost us nearly $200. We want out, and we are going to buy Google Nexus 4 phones and sign up for a prepaid service. Since Straight Talk has dropped AT&T service, Net 10 seems to be our only option. Anything that runs off the T-Mobile plans is going to have incredibly bad service in the area.

My question is this... what exactly is the process for porting my current number to Net 10 from AT&T?

1. Do I cancel my service with AT&T first?
2. Do I notify Net 10 first that I want to port and they take care of everything?
3. What exactly do I need to do in terms of purchasing a SIM?

When you switch service, the new provider handles all the porting, and they'll tell you what you need to do.

Empath is correct. The new provider handles all the porting. You just give them all your information for your old account. You don't have to tell your old provider.

Response by poster: So, we would be off the hook from the old provider at that time? Or do we have to notify them? Can I use my old SIM?

Do not cancel service with AT&T first. You risk losing your number. Do #2 first, go to Net 10, arrange a plan and tell them you want to port the number over from your current carrier. After the number is ported, confirm with AT&T that your account is closed (It is). I do not know about the sim, but Net 10 will.

AT&T phones are still supported by Straight Talk -- the phone I am typing on right now is an unlocked iPhone from AT&T. I had to buy my SIM from eBay is all. I think it was $50.00?

Yes, the new provider will notify the old one and cancel your account. Agree with JohnnyGunn that if you tell AT&T first, you risk them doing something nefarious and trying to make it difficult for you.
