Movie Filter: Name That Movie!

A jillion years ago, I caught the last few minutes of a movie. I have no idea what the name is. Please hope me!

There is a British couple talking in a Middle Eastern setting. They are probably engaged to be married. There was war, rebellion, something. She looks ashamed. She thinks he will not marry her/accept her. He apparently thinks she was gang-raped and tells her "I will never ask." He still wishes to marry her. She looks very relieved.

Moments later, a gorgeous young Middle Eastern man rides up. He looks upon the woman with adoration. She stands there and returns his adoring gaze. It is a kind of wordless goodbye.

The British man suddenly realizes she didn't lose her virginity to gang rape. It was an affair. He starts to say something in disgust. The woman bites back "You said you would not ask."

What film is this?

Any idea when the movie came out or what context you saw it in?

My first guess is The Sheltering Sky. American couple in North Africa, lots of sexy secrets. In the movie, the couple is played by Debra Winger and John Malkovich. That said, I think the end of the movie is pretty different from what you describe. But it does involve a man attempting to rescue a woman who's had an affair. The guy who'd probably be in the scene you describe would be Campbell Scott. There's no engagement.

Does this look familiar? It's been overdubbed with music so no dialogue; skip to 5:55.

Response by poster: I was not Debra Winger. I am pretty sure it was a British couple, not American.

The middle eastern youth had very striking eyes, possibly blue.

It may have been an HBO movie.

I can't say when, really. But likely at least 13 years ago. I have often had no TV in the years since my divorce and I think I probably have not had HBO in at least that long. I think I might have been living in Southern Cali at the time. If so, my now 26 year old would have been between like 10 and 13 years old. So 13 to 16 years ago is my best guess.

I will try to check the video clip later. I can't do that right now.

These films each have some of the elements you describe, don't know if you have considered them:
-Jewell in the Crown
-Passage to India
-Heat and Dust

Also maybe The English Patient?

The TV movie TWinbrook8 offered is Harem (1986). Another clip, and a fan-made video. Haven't seen it, so I don't know if it has the ending you specified. But from the IMDB plot summary and user reviews, it sounds possible.

Jewel in the Crown (1984), suggested above, has the gang rape/affair plot element, but not the engagement. Coincidentally, Art Malik plays the love interest in each of these, as an Indian in Harem and a Turkish revolutionary in Jewel. He's also in A Passage to India, but I can rule that one out plot-wise (along with The English Patient.)

Response by poster: It doesn't look to me like it is any of the ones mentioned. (I have watched the clip, googled up photos, etc. Not clicking with what I remember.) I have seen The English Patient. Great movie but not it.

Response by poster: Oh, look, it's been a month. I am going to mark this resolved even though it isn't. I appreciate everyone's participation but TV and movies are a pretty low priority for me personally, so it was really just a "I have wondered this for years and, oh, I know, I could ask MetaFilter!" moment, not some burning question keeping me up nights.

Thanks for playing!

If anyone has any other suggestions, 'tis cool. But this is totally nbd either way.

Later guise.
