What should I draw?

I feel like there is something very specific that I want to draw, but can't figure out what it is. How can I do that? What's the most exciting thing you've drawn?

I used to sketch faces and bodies when I was a kid. I was a decent professional photographer for a few years. I've played a few different musical instruments for decades. I also used to write a lot. For some reason, however, I just stopped doing stuff like that a few years ago. I'm in my early 30s.

Anyhow, I guess I'm over myself now and have been trying to draw lately. Usually I draw a shape -- square or circle -- and turn it over into a cartoon face of some kind. It's fun, but I want to draw something more ... something else. I just can't figure out what it is.

This seems like a stupid question (to me), but it's a very strong feeling I'm having. It's hard to explain. I think the most common advice I've heard for most expressive work is "just do it until you find what you're looking for." I don't mean to be contrary, but that's not happening and I'm getting impatient. I enjoy the start, but it makes me really mad when I get thirty minutes into something and it's not right. Maybe that's why I quit in the first place, I can't recall.

Thanks for reading.
