I love Jane's Addiction. They are the sound of the Devil telling me about sin and what you can get away with in the darker corners of a spiritual life. So the question is: who else is out there who can bring it like they do? I'm looking for the next Three Days jam in this Askme - thick, coiling, roiling, powermad music that is as much about drugged-up incense-laden crunch as it is about tuneful, stuck in your head like an icepick melody? Release the hounds.

Best answer: A Storm in Heaven by the Verve is really good (psychedelic guitar rock), as is their second release Northern Soul.

Spiritualized is also really good. I quite like Laser Guided Melodies.

Sticking to the Jane's Addiction era: Do you like Rob Zombie? My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult?

I'll throw it out there: Nick Cave's "Stagger Lee."

Minus the "drugged up" bit, there's some Fugazi songs that might do it for you - Shut the Door, Promises, Blueprint, etc.

Possibly too obvious, but the Stones' four albums from '68 to '72 (Beggars Banquet through Exile) are pretty dark and decadent.

Nine Inch Nails?

Response by poster: Okay, more Gun Club and Storm in Heaven, less Nick Cave and NiN.

I'm looking for the trippy psych swirls and the hard power chords and the melody.

Think music that's intensely heavy that makes you lose time.

Also, anything by Jakob. And 'Seagull', by Ride.

I listen to a lot of stuff like this.

Some early Modern English hits on that that vibe, and does it well.

Likewise Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and their first two albums. And The Brian Jonestown Massacre, especially their album Methodrone.

The Verve's a great suggestion, and if you like that, there's a ton of similar bands from that era. You're probably hip to the Stone Roses, but there's also Ride and Spacemen 3.

Response by poster: Great suggestion on the BJM - I am A HUGE FAN OF THE DANDY WARHOLS for the same reason I like Jane's Addiction - that great heavy slam that they do. Their first album is a fucking monster.

The first Mercury Rev record, or maybe early(ish) Flaming Lips?

...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead seems sort of similar in spirit to me, that whole "heavy slam" thing I think you're describing.

I love Jane's Addiction and I also love the Pixies (especially Surfer Rosa, Come on Pilgrim, Doolittle) and Husker Du (Flip Your Wig, Candy Apple Grey). Maybe you do, too?
posted by fieldtrip at 6:20 PM on May 21, 2013

For better or worse, The Pixies didn't really do slow burns like Three Days, but they rocked it in other ways that I think of as jiving with what you're describing. I expect you've probably listened to all of their stuff. I think you might want to look into more metal sounding bands. Remember Faith No More? I thought their song The Real Thing (from the album of the same name) went well with Three Days on a mixtape from that era. A few years later, Tool's album Undertow was rocking my world in the same slow-burn melodic-metal way. I've only heard a few of their songs but Tomahawk (another band with Mike Patton) might be another good source--check out the song God Hates A Coward, not a slow-burner but a ripping great song.

Best answer: I love them too. This song by Lions reminds me of Jane's Addiction. You might check them out.

Also, Arcade Fire has a totally different style but sometimes hit me in the same way.

Best answer: I have an extensive collection of the stuff you've mentioned liking in this thread, aside from Janes Addiction, which I cannot stand. My friends say I listen to "heroin rock".

Bands that fit the Black Angels/BRMC/Verve/BJM/Spacemen 3/Spiritualized mold that haven't been mentioned yet:

The Warlocks: 1 2 3 4

Middle period Sonic Youth (like, Goo and Dirty): 1 2 3 4

The Morning After Girls: 1

Dead Meadow: 1 2

Engineers: 1

Blood on the Wall: 1

Tripping Daisy (possibly the best Jane's match here): 1 2 3

Others that I can't find on YouTube: "Stalled Parade" by Eleventh Dream Day, "Rising For You" by Suntan

Further arguments for the Black Angels: 1 2 3

Also, old skool stuff like the Stooges and MC5

Monster Magnet sounds suitable. Space Lord. Negasonic Teenage Warhead. Powertrip. See You in Hell.

An underrated grunge era "loud quiet loud" album is Greta's No Biting. The song Fathom is still one of my favorites.

music that's intensely heavy that makes you lose time

Bari Watts's blistering guitar work at the end of Once More does this for me.

Was gonna suggest Dead Meadow as well.

Also, Sleep.

Best answer: How about Tribe? "Joyride" was a big local hit in 1991, but they have some swirlier songs, like "Here At The Home". You can download all their albums here.

Bosnian Rainbows have an album coming out soon. Check out their songs "Turtle Neck" and "Torn Maps".

Listening to Abort put me in mind of Bad Boys Get Spanked and that naturally led on to Precious and Tattooed Love Boys and Louie Louie and then I remembered Bring Me The Head Of and She-Riff and Redhead and all was well.
