Question: Why did my Nano break?

I finally broke down and bought my first iPod, a Nano. After one week of by-the-book standard usage, it stopped responding. Help.

It's charged. The hold switch is *not* on. But it doesn't respond to the scoll wheel, except when I reset it. I'm on a PC, I've reinstalled iTunes, I've restarted it seven or eight times...nothing.

Did I get a lemon?

Probably a lemon, just return it for a new one. Before you do that, try holding the play/pause and menu "buttons" together to reset it manually, so if that helps.

Also, call tech support at Apple: 800-275-2273. That's probably not a novel solution, but I mention it just in case you haven't done it already. I've had one for two years, and another one for a few months and have never had even so much as a skip -- so I figure yours is a lemon. They can help you confirm this.

Is there anyway to completely reformat it? Could this have something to do with the new screen lock?

If you have an Apple store you can just walk into they will often simply hand over a new one, presuming you did not get an engraving, or at least that's been their policy with the standard unit.

Sounds like a lemon. Take it in to your nearest Apple store if you live near one, and they can usually check it out for you on the spot and tell you what's wrong.

May not be true for nanos, but the apple.com/support area had me go through some diagnostics before returning my third-generation Pod. It might include a reset that'll get you up and running again, or at least will get your problem in their support system so if it is a lemon, a box will soon arrive that you can pack your nano into and send off. Sorry you're having to contend with this!
