Options for fun, multi-generation family stay near Portland OR in May?

My dad is turning 70 and we're trying to schedule a three night stay in Oregon somewhere as a surprise for him. Unfortunately, almost everything in Portland is booked the weekend in question (May 17th) as the Rock and Roll half marathon is happening. We need other ideas for places that would be fun for my folks and for my children....give me your best ideas!

My folks are on the Oregon coast, I'm also in in Oregon, and my sister is hoping to fly in to Portland. She'd like to meet up with her boyfriend, who will be working until Friday in Pacific City-so Central Oregon wouldn't work well. My folks are active and in great health, enjoy wine, food, and the blues. My sister and I love food, too. My kids range from 3-16, though the 3 year old may be on a trip with dad that weekend (which would make this all easier to plan). We'd thought about renting a house in Portland, but the ones she's found so far all seem to be booked. Skamania is unavailable. There are some hotels in Portland, but most are pretty suburban and very basic...if we're going to do Portland, we'd love to be close to downtown and/or have a place with a pool. My sister's been looking at Wine Country, but I'm not sure if there are places that would be fun for the kids, too. Mt. Hood? Northern Coast?

What about Hood River? Lots to do, including outdoorsy stuff and wineries. You could drive the 60 minutes from Portland to there and explore Multnomah Falls and have lunch, then continue on to Hood River and stay the weekend.

Off the beaten path, but Horse Creek's Delta House is awesome. There are 4 bedrooms that have 2 double beds each and their own bathrooms, with a central kitchen, dining room, and game room. I was amazed how new and nice everything was. There is a huge yard for picnics, and the owners also do rafting trips- complete with shuttle service. He told me that they recently took an 82 year old out on the raft and she loved it.

McMinnville. Wine tasting. Hotel Oregon. Aviation museum and waterpark. Done.

Hood River is also a lovely option! Don't miss Double Mountain brewery (and pizza) and go down to the river to watch the kite-boarders.

Response by poster: Edgefield and Hotel Oregon both appear to be unavailable, darn it. Any other recommendations for McMinnville lodging? I forgot all about the waterpark...that would be fabulous. How about Hood River lodging recs?

Thanks for the Horse Creek rec...I think we went to a wedding there. Lovely place, but it is probably too far for everyone else :(

Quick list
Evergreen Aviation Museum and Waterpark C'mon, how cool is it to waterslide out of a 747 plane mounted on the roof?!?
Salt and Straw (local and responsible ice cream) Who doesn't love ice cream??? Hint: go for the "Grandma Malek's Almond Roca with Salted Ganache" or "Cinnamon Snickerdoodle" flavors.
A day in the gorge with waterfalls and wonderful scenery
...and round it off with the blues at The Blue Diamond.

If the snow clears early enough, there is a lot of fun at Ski Bowl. There are zip lines, go carts, alpine slides, bungee's and more.

Have you looked into AirBnB or VRBO options?
