Learning via Treehouse

Have you had experience with Treehouse, the web design/app building/coding education site? How did it go? Was it better than spending $25/month on books or trawling online for free resources?

Do you find you learn well from videos? I think I do. I haven't used Treehouse, but I've used a similar service and been happy. I think it depends on how you best learn. So for some video is the way to go, for others a book makes more sense.

The issue for me was self-motivation. Treehouse tries to make that a bit easier with badges and email reminders, but it seems I'm hopeless. I watched a few videos, did the work, then forgot all about it and gave up. The same thing happened with Learnable, Codecademy and Lynda, though they're all great.

I really love it. The combination of video and coding exercises is keeping me engaged. Just video (Lynda) or just coding exercises (w3, codeacademy) never works for me. I'm using it to brush back up on HTML5 and CSS3 while I teach myself Python and Django. I also find it's the best out there for learning to build iOS apps - I have a bunch of neglected O'Reilly books to prove this. Also, they're growing a ton -- I get weekly emails about new tutorials that would each be worth way more than $25. If you want a discount code from me, memail.

Response by poster: Based on some off-line conversations, I've been trying Codecademy. I'm starting with the "Web Fundamentals" course and am feeling pretty good about what I've learned. I haven't been flying through the lessons (I just hit the "100 point" badge this morning). Everything so far has been broken into small enough pieces to keep from overwhelming me.

As I get deeper into the weeds, I may need more demonstration-based instruction. At that point, I'll reconsider paying up for Treehouse.
