Charity in NY

Volunteering in NY.

I'm looking for ways to volunteer for charitable purposes in NY. I'm going to be a lawyer, so I probably won't have very much time--probably once a week for a few hours at most. I'd ideally want to do something that put me in touch with people in a different race/class background from me (like homeless shelters or old folks' homes), rather than, say, helping a non-profit write grants or making phone calls for your favorite leftist group. Any ideas?

Take your pick. NYC has a whole pile of - and needs - a great many groups which provide legal advice and aid to very low income people.

Try volunteermatch.org - the site lets you input those sort of preferences and then lists various opportunities that meet your criteria.

Another good volunteer-matching site is idealist.org.

yup--those, or something like God's Love We Deliver, which makes and brings meals to homebound people with Aids, or Housing Works.

I want to tip my hat to you... you're a great person for providing help like that. For some reason it always makes me happy to hear of an attorney (or future attorney) putting their skills towards charitable work.

If you mean New York City, I had good experiences volunteering with New York Cares, which coincidentally I joined after deciding to sell out and go to law school.

Is there any reason you wouldn't volunteer for some kind of legal services job? Opportunities abound in New York, and it would be a great complement to your legal education. Your law school ought to have plenty of information. (But don't expect to just roll in off the street and get an internship -- it can be a rather competitive. You'll end up with something eventually, though.)
