Have you heard of these two short stories?

Can MeFi help me track down these two stories?

Back in the 1970s, as a wee middle schooler, I read two short stories that I've been unable to locate and that I'd like to share with my students. The first was about a teenager who, out fishing one night, hooked a manta ray and nearly drowned. (Kind of an Old Man and the Sea vibe.) I cannot remember either the name or the author.

The second one was a science-fiction piece titled "The Good Samaritan"--but NOT the one by Isaac Asimov. This one was about a manned mission to some planet that comes across an extraterrestrial, and the captain of the space ship orders one of his men to give up his spot so the ET could be taken to earth.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
