What's the longest it's taken to finally become friends with someone?

What's the longest it's taken to finally become good friends with someone?
Over the years that i've been friends with people i've realized with some of them it took us years before we finally become good, steady friends that talked all the time,etc...
For example, i've known this one guy since we were in elementary school back in 1993. We didn't really become good friends that kept in contact until just recently towards the end of last year.
Another friend, we've gone back and forth between talking and not talking over the years. Hopefully sooner or later something will stick.
Have any of you ever had experiences like this where it took awhile before you finally became good friends with someone? Why does it take forever sometimes with certain people?
