What kind of tree is this?

A friend wants to ID this tree that is in her yard in Austin, TX. Pictures of the tree in question. Thanks, AskMe!

I'm pretty sure that's an elm tree.

Inclined to agree with Houstonian - that looks very much like a Texas Elm. I used this site to narrow it down - what a great resource. Curious to know if TN has something similar.

Almost definitely some sort of Elm. The elm family is fairly large, so some more research would need to be done on which variant. The habit, bark and leaves all match. I'm curious about what look like little thorns; are those where the fruit/seeds form?

I'm not sure what you're referring to. There are small "mini-leaf" structures at the base of the leaf stems; I'm not sure what they're called, but they're more leaflike than thornlike on most plants.

Best answer: Cedar elm, Ulmus crassifolia for sure, or Texas elm as jquinby says. They grow up into west Tennessee and Missouri along the Mississippi. They get bigger and taller up there, but they're cool as hell and gnarly in Texas (like many trees there).
