How do I sync with my Motorola V3 Razr?

I just bought a too-cool-for-you Razr V3 from T-Mobile. I can get it to talk via Bluetooth (oh it routes through my laptop speakers, fancy) -- but I can't figure out how to transfer an MP3. Also is there a definitive community site that everyone goes to for ringtones, wallpapers, etc.?

It seems I might have to purchase a $30 Motorola tool kit to get this to happen, but there must be a free option right? I mean I did pay up my ass for this. I figure if those darn kids can figure out to decode DVDs there's got to be a thriving community somewhere. All I want to do is download my own ringtones and perhaps chose from something other than the 3 or 4 provided wallpapers.

Assuming you have a bluetooth dongle and it's driver installed, and that you're using windows xp, all you need to do is right click the bluetooth icon in the system tray. Click quick connect, file transfer and pick the device. You'll need to search for devices your first time and pair it, but once that's done you'll click file transfer and whatever your device is named and you'll be connected. Just drag and drop the ringers, wallpapers or games. There is a program out there called "Mobile Phone Tools" but it costs money and is a lot harder to make work. The only advantage to that program is that it lets you sync your phonebook and calender.

Ah, I see the OBEX transfer opens up an audio/picture/video directory. Using bluetooth seems somewhat unwieldy though (Menu->Connections->Bluetooth->Setup->Find me), you would think they would have made it a one step process.

Motorola doesn't seem to have very good UI people :( which is sad because I like their phone designs and features. Most anti-Moto cell users make this the primary point of their arguments.

Um. That didn't answer your question, though...the best you can do is to set Bluetooth to be one of the four main menu items, then "Find Me" is only two button presses away instead of four.

Any other sites besides Vxxx? Not to get picky, but it's nearly impossible to navigate (makes me love Metafilter though).

Thanks phox, I have not heard of Vxxx before. I have a V188 thru T-Mobile. A couple months ago I tried to send myself wallpaper & MP3 for a ringtone via smashthetones -- did not work. At the time I figured I would have to sign up for "t-zones" @ $5 more a month in order to do this...then forgot about the issue.

So thanks for the link and I will keep digging thru Vxxx.

My favorite things about mp3 ringtones is that you can easily make your own. I would highly recommend Mobile Phone Tools because it even includes a tool to take any mp3 and choose just a clip from it to be a ringtone. You can also use other audio editing software like Soundforge.

Mobile Phone Tools is distributed pretty freely in Canada by Telus Mobility (included in the package when you buy a data cable) and can be found on many torrent sites.
