V3 Razr File Exchange

How can I transfer files to/from a Motorola V3 Razr and a new Powerbook if the Bluetooth File Exchange seemingly can't do it? It recognizes the phone, but can't see the internal structure of the phone's storage system. Motorola's Mobile Phone Tools has no Mac version. I can sync contacts and calendars with iSync and via Bluetooth, but I have a friend who has the same phone, but the inverse problem: he can transfer files with Bluetooth, but can't get the phone to sync contacts and calendars.

Best answer: If you can't browse it you need to send and receive files individually. If you have the Bluetooth menu enabled in Mac OS X, just select "Send File" and your phone should receive it and save it somewhere. There should be an equivalent option in the phone for sending files to another device, though I've never used a RAZR.

I have a RAZR and a PBG4 (rev 1) and have never had a problem getting files to transfer; my phone usually needs to be put into discover mode before I try though.

I've never attempted using the RAZR with iSync, so I don't know if I'd have problems with that (and therefore be in the same boat as your friend).

BTW, I've flashed my phone multiple times with images available at MotoX but you need a set of Windows-only tools to do the job. My phone was originally an unlocked Cingular model, but I live in Canada and the flashing has disposed of their look & feel.

1. What version of OS X are you running? I had the same issue (no BT file exchange) with the original 10.4, but subsequent updates fixed it.

2. What version of OS X is your friend using? In 10.3, iSync wouldn't work properly for me, but the BT file exchange was always fine.

(I have a motorola v500, which is pretty much the same guts as the RAZR, iirc.)

Response by poster: Cillit Bang's suggestion solved the powerbook- to-phone problem. Bluetooth File Exchange can send a file to the phone even if its destination is unknown. Unsurprisingly, a picture file ended up safely in the phone's pictures folder. Still no way to read the phone to send files from it to the computer. Thanks to all so far.

Response by poster: Postscript: in the Razr's menu, when in camera mode, there is a command called "Move," which, when chosen, allows you to transfer images from the phone to another Bluetooth device, including a computer. Problem solved at least for image files. Haven't looked into audio but assume it's the same deal.
