Where should we stay on Koh Phangan Island?

FullMoonFilter: Where should we stay on Koh Phangan Island (Thailand) while there to attend the Full Moon Party in mid September?

The party occurs on Haad Rin Beach, but we'd rather stay in a beachside bungalow away from the mayhem. :)

Can anyone recommend a budget bungalow (< 400 baht, with internet booking if possible) that will allow easy access to the party, but that will afford some peace and quiet. google has provided the following links, but i'm not sure which bungalows to pick (or where!): - a href="http://www.kohsamui.org/hotels03.html">Koh Phangan hotels & Bungalows

- Accomodations in the South East of Koh Phangan (Had Wai Nam, Had Thian, and Had Yuan, sound like good locations, but appear to be only accessible by boat of mountain footpath.)

Best answer: This is the best travel site for Thailand, with very reliable and up-to-date info on accommodation.

You don't need to stay too close to Haad Rin. By the time the sun comes up you'll want to flee the noise, trash and collected idiots, so escaping to another part of the island will seem like paradise.

I recommend staying on Koh Samui and taking the boat across for the party. Pha Ngan has become the centre-point for so many obnoxious Israeli backpackers that it's nearly unbearable. On Samui you can get away from the morons. At least to a greater degree, anyway.

By the way, there are rumors the full moon parties will be shut down completely soon.

"Full moon party ban opposed", from the Bangkok Post.

Best answer: I DJed at the Paradise party in '98 & went back for a brief look when I was passing thru in Jan last year. The change scared the crap out of me. Not nice at all & not something I'd recommend any more.

My tip - head for Haad Tien which is two beaches up from Haad Rin. You can get a boat from Haad Rin jetty. Links to accommodation here but you may not get much luck booking via the internet.

Sounds like you need a more touristy set-up so soiled cowboy's Koh Samui suggestion seems a good 'un. There are regular speedboats that go over & back at full moon.

Best answer: Haad Rin has a sunset and a sunrise beach (it's a very thin little isthmus). Can't remember which way around they are, but the party will be on the nicer side (sunrise, I think...). The other side is a not-as-good beach, but cheaper accomodation, and still only a short walk from the action.

Response by poster: i_cola: I think we'll try to boat up to Haad Tien. Thanks for the tip!
