I don't watch NFL but Claudia's around 28th and Hawthorne is a good sports bar when I'm in there during basketball games. I hear there's a Packer bar somewhere deep in SW if you're interested. I remember an ask.mefi thread about that place a few weeks back but am too lazy to look it up right now. Sorry.

The Kingston (W Burnside and 19th/20th) is a fun spot -- good greasy breakfasts for Sunday morning games, good beer for evening games

pwb503:

when i lived here before there was a kickass packer bar at SE 212th & stark called pal joey, but they've moved and are no longer a packers bar. in fact, i called them and they don't even have sunday ticket.

grrr....

The bar at The Ram in Lake O is where a lot of the people from Lake O and west linn go. Same with the sports bar that's on Terwilliger towards Lewis & Clark. Both have great large big screens and are absolutely packed on sundays ... but I think both also pre-empt NFL for Ducks/Beavers games if they conflict.

For the NBA (and I'm sure that none of you really care, but meh...) you can't beat the bar formerly known as Cal-Sports (aka SlabTown). It's pretty good for Baseball, so-so for hockey, and really excellent during political debates, so I suppose it'd be aight for your footballs.

I'm curious if anyone in town has largish HDTVs in their sports bars, or if they're all still stuck on burnt in early 90's era big screens.

togdon-- is Cal Sport / Slabtown still viable as a sports bar? i had heard that, in my absence, they had turned into a hipster hangout. i used to go there all the time for packers' games whenever i was feeling to lazy to drive all the way out to gresham-- maybe i'll have to try them again.

now that they've changed the name back to slabtown, do they still have the kick-ass "cal-sport better burger?"

for the Packer fans in Portland, is it because they're wisconsin transplants, or just like the team for whatever reason?

When I visited Oregon, everyone seemed to have Wisconsin relatives.

I lived in Wisconsin for several very formative years when i was young. Got hooked on the Pack the same year I got hooked on Star Wars, in fact.

Re: Cal-Sports/Slabtown...

I watch basketball there semi-religiously. There are a boatload of hipsters some nights, but they're almost always sports watching hipsters who keep their annoying hipsterdom limited to style of dress. The food mirrors Fellini's (the place that used to share a wall with Satyricon) and is tasty for both vegetarians (myself) and meat-eaters (everyone I know)... both the chicken and beef burgers get rave reviews.

Happy hour prices are better than good, and if you get there in time to enjoy them you can often snag a spot on the couch.

The only downside is the occasional live music, but it's almost always mellow and quiet enough to tune out.

Like I said, I've never been for football, but all other sports seem well represented, and the two bartenders I see in there most frequently are always willing to change channels on at least one of the TVs to fit whatever sport fetish you happen to lean toward. It's definitely worth a shot if you liked it in the past.
