It to correct, and eke to rub and scrape

If you had limited time (and possibly attention span) and a story to write, what motivated you? Was it having an audience? A writing group? Writing exercises? A challenge? Assuming you are not writing fiction for fame/school/work/money, and you are short on time (not ideas), what motivated you and helped you develop an individual technique?
