Help me plan up to a few months of fun/service/bonding

one to three months of bonding/service in a warmer region of US

I'm likely to have three months in the US (February, March, April) where me and my man have no job, no place set up to stay (but we can easily stay with my parents during that time, so being homeless isn't a concern), limited spending money. We probably won't get a chance like this ever again and it will be a sort of 'honeymoon period' for us. I'd like to make the most out of it.

He'll be new to the US with English that could use some polish so activities that involve talking/interacting to others are great.

I'm thinking that there must be some great volunteer activities, or other opportunities that provide simple housing, food, and a way to interact with people that is both fun and helpful to society.

Or something else... road trips sound like fun but I really want to keep our costs down. Maybe not spend more than a thousand dollars total on everything. I'd love to be outdoors in a warmer part of the US.

It doesn't have to fill the full three months, one month might be ideal.

Salaried working during this period is not an option.

Seconding WWOOF - there is really a wide range of options in terms of the kind of work that is expected vs. advertised so make sure you and your host are on the same page.
Another thing is simple work exchange - like in hostels or yoga retreat centers (might fit the talking/interacting better). Check out helpx!
