How Do Human Cannons Work?

How do the cannons that shoot human cannon balls work? I'm guessing it's different than the way real cannons work. This page says it's a trade secret. Now I must know!

I believe there is a big spring-loaded contraption in there. The smoke, light, sound are all just gimmicks.
